I shared many things with the family when we lost Subrato, now nearly ten years ago.

I worked with Subrato closely for more than twenty years. He had my tremendous respect, as a scientist, as an intellect and as a person. I cherished that he was free thinker and was willing to disagree with you and at the same time maintain an open mind with a wink and still respect you. The world today could use more of that.

He frequently lead a close and revealing conversation with these words: "My friend..." And he was.

For some reason his memory came to me strongly, in the last day and I was flooded with beautiful memories about our time together.

Truly a marvelous human being. I still miss him ten years later.

In addition to all the wonderful work that Subrato did in buildings research, Subrato wrote "A Guide to Solar Water Heating in Florida" in 1977-78 -- a very much needed publication for the State of Florida in the post-oil embargo days. Subrato explained how a SWH system worked, the various SWH system types, sizing, and economics for Florida homeowners. For me, it was a true technical introduction to what has been the foundation of my life-long career in solar energy.

Thank you Subrato! I was privileged to call you my mentor, my boss, and my friend.

This is huge loss for his dearest family and the engineering world. I worked with him for a short period of time and have nothing but great memories from that duration. His ever-smiling face will be missed greatly.

I pray to God that his family is given enough strength to get through this painful time.

Dear Dr. Subrato, may you rest in peace!

Dear Mrs. Chandra, Seema and Samir,

I had the great pleasure of working for Subrato during my last years at UCF. I have always looked back on my experiences at FSEC as some of the most pivotal in my life. Subrato’s guidance and support were the foundation for my career and I can not think of my professional life without him. The last time I was able to visit with Subrato was during a trip to FSEC in 2008. As always he was smiling and cheerful and very interested in how things turned out for me. It is a rare thing to encounter a human being who is gifted in so many ways. My heart truly goes out to all of you and I will continue to think of him always. Knowing how hard it is to lose someone you love, I truly hope that wonderful memories will fill a few moments of your life each and every day.
My deepest sympathies to all of you.

I had known Subrato Chandra for more than 30 years while working at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC). He and I had special kinship because of both of us hailing from the same alma mater, IIT Kharagpur. Subrato was highly regarded by his colleagues, and widely respected among his peers in his area of Buildings Energy Research. Subrato was an innovative thinker, brilliant scientist, improvising engineer and an excellent manager.
Subrato initiated the Energy Efficient Housing Research at the FSEC and pioneered Buildings America Program. We had a close professional association and closer personal relationship. When we moved to Brevard County in 1981, Subrato introduced us to most of our friends in the Indian community. His son and our son were born only 6 days apart. We often met at dinner parties, and other social and religious gatherings. In 1980s we also played bridge and other cards games together. Subrato will be missed as an esteemed colleague, a good friend and more so as a great person.
Our heartfelt condolences to Mitra, Seema and Samir.

I was devastated to hear this terribly sad news, but I will always remember Subrato for the gentleman he was, and for the kindness he always offered to me in my own moments of personal sorrow.
Tenderly, may time heal your sorrow.....
Gently, may friends ease your pain.
Softly, may peace replace heartache.....
And may warmest memories remain.
It is never easy for those left behind.
May it help to know how many share your sorrow,
And stand with you in your time of need.

One of the greatest among us. By “us” I mean so much more than FSEC, UCF or even the energy community. And by “great” I mean so much more than engineer, colleague or friend. A great human being.

Thank you for his time with us.
