I had the good fortune to meet Bill 30 years ago while he was national counsel for Boy Scouts of America. We traveled the country together on some cases and were kindred spirits in the Law and otherwise. He was one of a kind and will be sorely missed.
I want to share a quick story as it demonstrates Bill’s ever present sense of humor.
Bill came to San Diego for a case we were handling and, as usual, we decided to have dinner together. That evening I put him in our little 13 1/2 Boston Whaler and down the bay we went to the Chart House. Being a frequent visitor to Baja California I suggested tequila instead of the normal
Jack Daniels. After we settled in with our second drink Bill asked about going back up the bay in the dark. I suggested it would be fine, but Bill then surprised me by asking to see the tequila bottle. After looking at it in silence for a couple of minutes he noted that the only warning was not to drive machinery after drinking the contents. Bill then announced proudly that we were not driving machinery; we were driving a boat and would thus have no problems whatever. We didn’t.
I will miss him so.
