It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Patricia (Pat) Ann Labuda. Pat was born in Elmira, NY, lived in Rockville, MD for 50 years and died in Miami, FL at the age of 81. Pat graduated from Buffalo State University Read Obituary
Pat was a true warrior for peace and justice, as well as health care. I was one of her physicians for over a dozen years in her many missions to the Grande Anse, and worked with her closely. She was indefatigable; bulling her way through customs with bags of medicine, arranging transportation and housing, and generally keeping track of us, her flock of volunteers. She pushed us to work long hours, and to tolerate personal and political discomforts as she did.. Pat introduced me to Democracy Now, and proudly informed me once that she had "finally gotten arrested" at a DC demonstration for justice. Many people in Haiti owe their lives to her courage and strength. We, her volunteers, owe her our broader perspective of developing world problems and a love for the people of Haiti. My thoughts still return to our courageous translators and nursing staff, who are still dealing with those problems. Pat was a unique form for good in the world.
Pat Labuda was one of my favorite people in the planet, though I didn't ever tell her that. Hearing of her passing deeply saddened me. I will always cherish the memories of our times together in Haiti. Her courage and dedication to the people there inspired me greatly.
I will keep her and Bill and your family in my prayers.
I am sure Pat went straight to heaven for all the good work she did in Haiti.
Very sad to hear the news about Pat's passing. She was absolutely fearless and outspoken for social justice. She personified "a tough mind and tender heart" that Dr. King referenced. Cherished working with her on many Palestine issues.

Dear Mom-
First and foremost, you were a beautiful child of God. He made you with kindness, love, and adventure. You devoted your life to bearing and raising six children. This definitely must not have been easy. I never saw you tired. I never saw you complain.
You were a leader. You believed and fought for what is right. You were a teacher. You taught us morals, ethics, God, love. You taught us to value all people. You taught us to love our neighbor.
You were a loving mother. You were always patient with us. You always cared for us when we were sick. You opened doors for us. You shuttled us around. You encouraged us to develop and explore our talents. You encouraged us to fly.
You were a shepherd of God. You sang God’s love. You gave God’s compassion. You brought God’s light to those in darkness. You saw pain, and you were driven by God to heal. You saw dispair, and you were driven to support.
You have healed thousands.
You have inspired thousands.
You have spread God’s love as far as you could.
You have carried God’s light and love to so many.
I am proud to call you my mother, and I am inspired and awed by your work.
You had many options on how to lead your life and you chose a life of service to people.
I love you, Mom. Thank you.

I join all of those in this occasion to express my most sincere condolences to Pat's husband and her whole family. As a Haitian having had the great privilege to work with Pat, I will always be grateful for the way she dedicated herself to helping my fellow countrymen. She was a great gentle soul most interested in helping others, especially young Haitians. Rest in peace, Pat. You did well. I will not forget you. Bon travèse....
Pat was a generous and kind friend who never shied away from causes that came to her attention. As a Haitian-born woman myself, I can attest to the deep love, respect, and devotion Pat had for Haiti and Haitians . I will remember her genuine smile, unobtrusive but meaningful presence among us during times of crisis. Pat loved her family and spoke often and highly of Bill and their children. Pat’s life speaks volumes of her deep faith - her smile reflected a sense of optimism and hope for better days. May Pat rest in peace and may her family find comfort in the legacy she built and left behind.
