MRS. JEAN M. GRIEGER, 90, a retired employee of the Dade County Public School’s Cafeterias, died Thursday, September 30, 2021, in Miami, FL. Born September, 1931, in Rochester, NY, she lived in Fair Haven, NY until moving to Miami in 1965. While in New York, Jean ran the kitchen at the Historic Pleasant Beach Hotel in Fair Haven. Upon her move to Miami, she worked at Woolworths Department store and soon after went to work for the Dade County Public School’s Cafeterias, working at several school cafeterias such as Tropical Elementary, Riviera Junior High, Kendale Lakes Elementary, Sunset Park Elementary, and others. Upon the death of her husband of 46 years, Herman L., in 1999, Jean retired from the Dade County Public Schools soon thereafter. Jean was a Lifetime Gold member of the German American Social Club of Greater Miami, the Wolcott, NY Elks Lodge #1763, as well as the American Legion Auxiliary Florida Unit #0098. In the early years of the new century, Jean started volunteering at Baptist Health Systems – Baptist Hospital running errands and working in dining services for several years. In January, 2019, suffering from mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Jean moved to a wonderful small ALF in the local area where she thrived, spending her time with arts and crafts, playing cards and going for walks with her son Jeff on the weekends, and helping wherever she could. In September, 2020, Jean became ill and was hospitalized twice and went to rehab twice, and as of October, 2020, with an inability to walk, entered the St. Anne’s Nursing Center. A small celebration on her 90th birthday was held with her at St. Anne’s by her son Jeff, and due to COVID restrictions, only one other very close friend in September, 2021. We all will miss her loving generous spirit, helping hands, and distinctive sense of humor.
