May 29, 1929 - May 10, 2021
Elías Lozada Tamayo of Miami, Florida, passed away on May 10, 2021. He was 91. Born in Arequipa, Peru, and raised in Lima, Elías earned his law degree at the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín and went on to a varied and creative career as in-house counsel to Banco Continental, jeweler, importer/exporter, and public-sector administrator. A fervent believer in the American Dream, he migrated with his family to Nothern California in the mid-1970s. These were some of Elías’s happiest years; in the Bay Area he pursued personal passions such as scuba diving and spear fishing while instilling in his children a love of books and an appreciation for the value of education. As a child and teen, he lived apart from his parents and siblings for several years; this painful separation deepened his devotion to his brothers and sisters, whom he visited constantly throughout his life. He passed this sense of unity to his own children, encouraging them to always be un solo puño (a single fist), always supporting one another. After returning to Peru for much of the 1980s, Elías lived the final three decades of his life in South Florida, where he operated a small business in artisan products, developed friendships with other aficionados of live piano music, and lived near his daughters and grandchildren. Elías was a knowledgeable music lover; his children know every measure of Camille Saint-Saens’s piano concerto no. 2 in G minor, as well as the serenatas and madrigals of the Argentine comedic troupe Les Luthiers (and the works of fictional composer Johann Sebastian Mastropiero). A skilled amateur carpenter, Elías built desks for his children and other pieces of furniture in his home. He loved playing table tennis, eating rocoto relleno and helado de lúcuma, and finding unexpected treasures at garage sales. Elías is survived by his children Rosario and Carlos; grandchildren Sabrina, Lucas, Jamie Ernesto, Fiona, and Finn; and siblings Antonieta, Luis, and Adolfo. He is predeceased by his beloved daughter Marilu and his siblings Nestor, Percy, Caridad, Yolanda, Eduardo, Samuel and Angel. He will be remembered for his determination and work ethic, his love of literature and classical music, and his sense of family. A visitation will be held May 13 at the Van Orsdel Funeral Home at 11220 North Kendall Drive, Miami, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A private burial service at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery in Doral will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in honor of Elias Lozada Tamayo the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Posse Foundation-Miami.
